Kia has officially unveiled its latest electric three-row city crossover, the EV9 GT, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, showcasing impressive power output. This SUV is equipped with a front axle electric motor generating 214 horsepower, complemented by a more robust rear axle motor producing 362 horsepower. Consequently, the vehicle features an all-wheel drive system and can accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in a mere 4.3 seconds. Such performance is more than adequate for a family-oriented vehicle.
One notable feature of this model is the “Virtual Gear Shift,” a simulated gearbox that mimics the functionality of a conventional transmission, which is absent in electric vehicles. This system creates the sensation of gear changes and can even restrict acceleration at top speeds. Hyundai previously implemented a similar concept in the Ioniq 5 N, though it received mixed reviews. In Kia’s case, this imitation may not appeal to all prospective buyers, although the steering column switches and Active Sound Design, which replicates the sound of a combustion engine, could resonate with a specific segment of the market.
The electric vehicle features an advanced dynamic suspension system that incorporates electronic control, which is synchronized with the steering response and braking efficiency. As a result, drivers can experience varying levels of comfort and control across the Normal, Eco, Sport, and My Drive modes, minimizing abrupt movements. For those seeking a more responsive driving experience, the GT mode can be activated, enhancing the vehicle’s responsiveness to steering inputs. However, it is noteworthy that the manufacturer has not disclosed the driving range on a single charge, which may raise concerns for potential buyers, as this is a critical factor for many. It is confirmed that the vehicle can charge from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes, indicating support for fast charging capabilities.
The interior of this urban crossover amusingly resembles that of a sports car more than a traditional family SUV with three rows of seating. It features a striking three-spoke steering wheel equipped with numerous buttons, while the door panels are enhanced with ambient lighting. The seats, though not explicitly sporty, evoke the feel of “bucket” seats and are visually appealing with their accent colors. Additionally, it boasts a digital instrument cluster alongside a sizable infotainment display. The exterior design has sparked some debate due to its angular features and a “flat” windshield; however, this reflects Kia’s new design language, which is now a defining characteristic of their vehicles.
