Tesla has introduced an updated version of the Model Y crossover, specifically designed for the Asia-Pacific market. This marks the first significant refresh of the SUV since 2020, with deliveries set to commence in China and nearby countries this March. However, it remains uncertain whether this updated model will make its way to Europe and the United States, or when that might occur.
The modifications to the Model Y closely resemble those made to the Model 3 sedan, incorporating features from other Tesla projects. The front end has been redesigned to be less rounded, featuring sharper lines, and the headlights have been replaced with a sleek LED strip, reminiscent of the Cybertruck and Cybercab prototypes. The headlights have been repositioned to the bumper, which now also houses a new camera that enhances the autopilot’s parking capabilities. Additionally, the traditional rear lights have been replaced with a similar LED strip located beneath a fixed spoiler. Overall, the new design aligns more closely with the aesthetics of various Chinese electric vehicles—competitors that have captured a portion of Tesla’s market share, which the company aims to reclaim.
The interior design has undergone some notable updates. It now features LED lighting and an extra screen for passengers to enjoy. While the steering wheel remains largely the same, a closer inspection reveals the absence of traditional turn signal buttons. Instead, Tesla has opted for a simple lever that is discreetly positioned behind the wheel. Additionally, the company has introduced new “acoustic” glass, which significantly lowers noise levels, a claim supported by various tests.
One notable enhancement in the cabin is the introduction of electric rear seats, which can be operated via a button located in the trunk. This feature simplifies access to the back area of the vehicle, enabling owners to easily fold down the rear seats for loading and unloading cargo. Tesla’s Chinese website refers to these seats as “anti-gravity,” though the specific meaning of that term remains ambiguous. Additionally, the seats come equipped with ventilation for added comfort.
The all-wheel drive model now boasts an impressive power reserve, rising from 688 km to 719 km. Additionally, its acceleration to 100 km/h has improved significantly, dropping from 4.9 seconds to just 4.3 seconds. You can claim the first version for $39,900, while the upgraded model is available for $41,400.
