External hard drives have become such a familiar and invisible companion in our lives that we rarely think about how much progress has been made in this area in recent years. A great example of what a modern portable storage should look like is the Samsung T7 Touch.
With the exception of specialists today, few people follow the evolution of the hard drive market, and meanwhile, the changes that have taken place on it are pulling towards a revolution. In addition to the fact that almost all current models already work on solid-state drives (SSD), many of them even outwardly bear little resemblance to the huge “books” of the past, which recently required an external power supply for operation.
Samsung T7 Touch Design
So, Samsung T7 Touch. The first thing that surprises the disk is its miniature size and weight. Tactile sensations say that you are holding an ordinary USB flash drive in your hand, slightly increased in size, while, in fact, in front of you is a full-fledged 2 terabyte hard drive, and even full of advanced functions (in addition to the versions we have tested, there are also 0.5TB and 1TB options).
Housed in a slim and durable aluminum body in either silver or black, the T7 Touch weighs less than 60 grams and measures 85 x 57 x 8 mm, which is only slightly more than a credit card. Based on the tests carried out, the manufacturer claims that the disc can easily survive a fall from a height of up to two meters, and gives a three-year warranty (subject to reasonable operating conditions, of course).
Surprised by the small size and weight of the disk, we proceed to study its capabilities. Of course, the presence of the USB 3.2 Gen2 interface provides virtually instant file transfer, and the built-in PCIe NVMe technology accelerates the sequential read / write process up to 1,050 / 1,000 MB / sec. It is very fast, but this is not the main feature of the model, because the main advantage of Samsung T7 is hidden in the word Touch.
In our time, the protection of personal and professional information has become both necessary and difficult. Despite the widespread use of cloud services, users still prefer to store the most sensitive information on local computers and servers. However, they cannot provide a 100% guarantee of protection against unauthorized access.
An elegant solution is offered by Samsung T7 Touch: the data on the disk is unlocked by identifying the user through a fingerprint – the corresponding scanner is located on the top panel of the case. Indeed, if we have long been accustomed to this way of accessing our smartphones and laptops, then it is logical to implement such a function in external drives. And Samsung was the first to implement it, moreover,
Moreover, access by fingerprint or password is only one of the degrees of data protection on the disk, because the built-in protection options also include AES 256-bit encryption system. So if you are worried about the safety of your confidential data or the fruits of creativity – photos, layouts or other works, then the T7 Touch will let you sleep peacefully.

The special proprietary software Samsumg Portable SSD Software is responsible for the implementation of data protection capabilities, each drive comes with firmware for PC and MacOS, in addition, the user can also use a special mobile application for smartphones and tablets on Android. There is a square LED indicator on the case, the glow of which informs the user about the status of the drive.
Checking in action
There are numerous scenarios for using this disk – these are transferring and storing important documents and photos, recording and watching movies, helping to install games, and much more. We settled on the multimedia aspect of the disc, trying to use it as a repository for ultra-high-definition movies and Hi-Res music.
I must say that even standard HDDs equipped with a USB 3.0 port do not allow you to quickly transfer a movie of about 50 GB to them – the process takes at least twenty minutes.
However, as soon as we connected the T7 Touch to the laptop, the data exchange speed increased by an order of magnitude. We dropped all the files planned for transfer to disk in just a couple of minutes. In general, the performance of the Samsung T7 Touch is its main trump card.
Of course, beautiful design and reliable data protection are also very important, but it was the acceleration of all connection and rewriting processes that finally won us over. Add to the listed advantages the total quietness and compactness and you have the ideal drive for any use case.
