The Xbox cloud gaming app is finally expanding beyond Samsung Smart TVs, coming to the latest Fire TV 4K consoles in July 2024. Samsung has been Microsoft’s exclusive TV partner since the debut of the Xbox app on Samsung Smart TVs in 2022. The Xbox app allows Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to stream games like Starfield, Fallout 4, Forza Horizon 5 and Fortnite over the internet directly to their TV without the need for an Xbox console.
And now, in July, the Xbox app will be coming to the 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K Max and 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K . It’s not clear why only the latest Fire TV models are compatible. More Fire TV models may likely be added over time, but these are the only two confirmed for now.
“Today, we’re announcing a partnership with Amazon that will allow Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members in more than 25 countries to play games directly from the Xbox app on select Fire TV devices through the cloud gaming service, giving people even more choice in how they play the games they love,” said Ashley McKissick , corporate vice president of Xbox Experiences.
To use the new functionality, you need to connect a compatible Bluetooth game controller, such as an Xbox or PlayStation DualShock/DualSense, to the Fire TV 4K. Access to Xbox cloud gaming requires an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which costs $17 per month. Xbox cloud gaming is available in HD resolution. There are currently no 4K, HDR, or Dolby Atmos options. There is no information yet about the Xbox app for other smart TV platforms.
