How to Remove AI Overviews from Google Search Results
Google’s AI Overviews — previously known as Search Generative Experience (SGE) — are rolling out to more users worldwide. While they can be useful for quick answers, not everyone is a fan. Some find them clutter the search page, push organic results further down, or deliver unhelpful summaries.
If you’d prefer your Google search results without AI Overviews, here’s how to minimize or remove them.
1. Use a Different Google Interface
At the moment, Google doesn’t provide a direct “turn off” button for AI Overviews in its main search interface. However, you can use alternatives to access the classic results:
-
Add
&udm=14to your search URL — This parameter tells Google to show a simplified search results page without AI summaries. -
Use a bookmark with UDM — Create a bookmark like:
Then add your search terms after the
q=.
2. Switch to a Different Search Engine
If you want to completely avoid AI-generated summaries, try switching to search engines that don’t use them by default:
-
DuckDuckGo — Privacy-focused and no AI overviews.
-
Bing (without AI sidebar) — You can disable the AI chat in Bing settings.
-
Kagi — Paid, ad-free, and no forced AI summaries.
3. Use Browser Extensions
There are browser add-ons designed specifically to remove AI Overviews from Google search:
-
uBlock Origin filter — Add this custom filter in uBlock Origin to hide the AI Overview box:
-
“Hide Google AI Overviews” extensions — Available on Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons.
4. Search From Incognito or Logged-Out Mode
Some AI Overview features roll out faster for logged-in users. Searching while logged out or in incognito mode sometimes reduces how often you see them — though this isn’t guaranteed.
5. Give Feedback to Google
At the top-right of an AI Overview box, click the three-dot menu and choose “Send feedback”. While it won’t instantly remove the feature, consistent negative feedback may influence Google’s future decisions.
Final Note:
Google is still experimenting with AI Overviews, and how much control users have over them may change. For now, the &udm=14 method combined with browser tools is the most reliable way to keep your results AI-free.
