The Shanling M1 Plus is an economical digital audio player that features balanced output support and delivers up to 660 mW of power. Priced at $209, this model occupies a position between Shanling’s entry-level players, including the M1s and M0 Pro, and their more sophisticated offerings like the M5 Ultra. Despite its affordability, the M1 Plus boasts an impressive array of features and substantial output power.
The M1 Plus operates on an enhanced version of the proprietary MTouch OS, which is specifically tailored for music playback, distinguishing it from Android devices by omitting third-party applications and potential distractions.
This player includes both 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced outputs. It is powered by the ESS ES9069Q DAC, complemented by two SGM8262 operational amplifiers, delivering up to 660 mW of power at 32 ohms through the balanced output.
Shanling has opted for MTouch OS over Android while still providing support for Tidal. Users can manage the device through the Eddict Player mobile application.
Additionally, the M1 Plus is equipped with bidirectional Bluetooth 5.2, supporting LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, and AAC codecs, ensuring a reliable connection and superior sound quality.
The device features a body constructed from aluminum and glass, showcasing a contemporary, angular design that enhances user comfort. On the left side, there are three tactile buttons for playback control, easily identifiable by their distinct shapes. The right side houses a volume control wheel, which doubles as a power button for the screen. This wheel provides noticeable detents during scrolling and offers a well-balanced resistance when pressed. The front of the device is equipped with a 3.2-inch touchscreen. While it demonstrates good responsiveness, the 480 × 320 pixel resolution appears relatively low, particularly when compared to the HiBy R1’s 3-inch 800 × 400 IPS display.
The battery life is estimated to reach a maximum of 12.5 hours when utilizing the single-ended output. However, in practical usage, the device operated for approximately 10.5 to 10.75 hours under moderate conditions, which is somewhat less than the specified duration.
The bottom panel features a USB-C port designed for connectivity with PCs and Android devices. Firmware updates can be performed using a microSD memory card or through Wi-Fi. The device supports microSD cards with a capacity of up to 2 TB, as the M1 Plus lacks internal storage. On the top panel, there are two headphone outputs available: one 3.5 mm and one 4.4 mm balanced.
The M1 Plus comes in a silver cardboard box with a white outer case. Included in the box:
- Shanling M1 Plus player;
- USB Type-A to Type-C cable;
- protective film for the screen (one is already installed);
- user manual;
- warranty card.
The M1 Plus operates on MTouch OS version 1.7. Its main interface accommodates up to 6 icons per page, totaling 17 icons. Users have the ability to add or remove icons, but rearranging them through dragging is not an option.
A downward swipe reveals a quick access menu for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and screen brightness settings. The interface is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly.
Two software issues have been identified: the time display occasionally resets, and certain tracks may be missing from the “All songs” list if they are located in the root directory of the microSD card.
In terms of audio performance, the M1 Plus delivers a balanced and neutral sound profile with a subtle enhancement in the mid-bass frequencies. The treble is clear and smooth, avoiding any harshness, while the mids are warm and natural without excessive coloration. The bass response is robust, with no noticeable low-end roll-off.
The soundstage is expansive and well-defined, with improved instrument localization and a pronounced depth, particularly noticeable when using narrow-range headphones.
Shanling M1 Plus is a small yet robust and cost-effective audio player that offers a well-balanced output, extended battery life, and excellent sound quality. While it does have some drawbacks, such as a low screen resolution and minor software glitches, it remains an outstanding choice for audiophiles seeking a high-performance player at an accessible price point.
