Marketing is a science that is difficult to understand. At the very least, it is not easy to understand the logic of the presentation schedule of new mirrorless cameras from major manufacturers. Judge for yourself – one by one, the OM System OM-5 , Canon EOS R6 Mark II and FUJIFILM X-T5 cameras were introduced , and these are cameras designed for demanding enthusiast photographers, or, as this category of content creators is also called, “advanced amateurs “, although this definition is much less specific than the first.
The previous model of the company, X-T4, turned out to be functional and popular, many photographers and cameramen use it in their work.
Today it’s time for an update – FUJIFILM introduced the 40.2MP X-T5 mirrorless camera. The price is $1699.95.
FUJIFILM X-T5
As the name suggests, this is the fifth model of the XT series and features the new 40.2MP backlit APS-C format X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor with X-Processor 5 as used in the X-H2 camera. The camera is unusual in many ways, starting with the size of the body – it is more compact than the X-T4, X-T3 and X-T2, and weighs only 557g, and this is a figure with a battery and an SD card.
The matrix measures 23.5 x 15.6 mm and has a resolution of 40.2 MP, video shooting is limited to 6.2K / 30p at 4:2:2 10-bit, for 4K HQ resolution, the image is oversampled from 6.2K, in addition, there is a possibility of digital zoom 2x without significant reduction in quality.
The camera supports object-detection autofocus, built using deep learning AI technology, as has become popular with all major manufacturers these days. The X-T5 tracks people’s faces and eyes, as well as a wide range of moving objects, including animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes and trains.
FUJIFILM X-T5
For storage media, the X-T5 uses two SD card slots, just like the X-T4. The camera features a new F-Log2 profile, which FUJIFILM claims provides a wider dynamic range of 13+ stops.
The camera outputs 6.2K RAW data to an external HDMI recorder, there are two codec options:
- ATOMOS: 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW up to 6.2K/29.97p
- Blackmagic Design Video Assist 12G: Blackmagic RAW up to 6.2K/29.97p
For photos, there is a Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function, it allows you to create images with a high resolution of 160 megapixels by combining 20 frames. FUJIFILM is famous for its film simulation filters, and the X-T5 offers 19 such filters, including the popular Eterna and the new Nostalgic Neg.
Handheld shooting will help the built-in IBIS image stabilization system with 5 axes of stabilization, it compensates for up to 7 stops of exposure. The minimum standard ISO sensitivity is 125, as in X-H2.
FUJIFILM X-T5 – controls
The camera is equipped with a 3.69 million dot electronic viewfinder with 0.8x magnification and a 1.84 million dot tilting LCD. Following the design tradition of the XT series cameras, the X-T5 has control dials for ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation. These controls do not leave anyone indifferent – you either like them or don’t like them, it’s just a matter of taste. However, the camera looks really very original.
Grip MHG-XT5
Optional accessories include the MHG-XT5 grip for use with heavy lenses, as the X-T5 camera body itself is very compact, and this grip adds the familiar right-hand grip for many. This pen does not block access to the battery compartment and SD card slots and has a built-in Arca-Swiss plate for mounting on tripods. In theory, this handle should have come with the camera in the box, and not be an option, since a DSLR-style grip is always more convenient than a flat body-style “soap dishes”.
