Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG DN II specifications revealed

The Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG DN II optics will be 10% lighter than the first generation, will have much more efficient autofocus, and will generally provide even better and sharper images without any unwanted effects. The cost of the new item will be 1,345 euros.

The Sigma company intends to compete with the most advanced lenses from Sony – the G-Master series, and also provide the most optimal choice for the L-mount bayonet mount. For this reason, the new Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG DN II will be available for Sony E and L-mount.

So, the new version of Sigma’s fast standard zoom lens is designed for those who want the latest lens, but are not willing to pay more than two thousand dollars.

At the same time, the second generation will receive a number of improvements that Sony’s G-Master II also has. For example, the aperture adjustment ring:

This ring will be able to be smoothly adjusted, which will provide more convenience when shooting video with the Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG DN II. There will also be a mode of operation with clicks, more familiar to photographers.

The main improvement is in the optical design of the future new product itself. From the press release published by the source, which will officially be released on May 16, it follows that the second generation lens includes, among other elements: 6 FLD glass elements, 2 SLD and 5 aspherical lenses. This sounds like a very advanced and complex optical design. In total, the lens will include: 19 elements in 15 groups (G-Master II: 20 elements in 15 groups).

The presence of such glass will allow for better correction of aberrations and coma that occurred in some scenarios with the previous generation lens (pictured below).

The updated optical formula will make the lens more compact and lighter. The weight of the Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG DN II will be 735 grams. The weight of the first generation optics is 100 grams more. In fact, Sigma managed to “catch up” with the G-Master in terms of weight: the Sony 24-70mm F/2.8 GM II lens weighs 734 grams with a lens hood. Without a hood, the weight will be 695 grams. Yes, there is a difference, but it is completely insignificant, so we can state an important achievement for Sigma.

The dimensions of the new item have also been revealed. The version for Sony E has the following dimensions: 87.8 x 122.2 mm. For G-Master II it is 88×120. Again, an actual hit, this time in the compactness indicator, which is quite important for the Sony E system, whose cameras are traditionally one of the smallest on the market.

Available aperture range: F/2.8 – F/22. And the minimum focusing distance, depending on the selected focal length, will be 17 cm (at 24mm) – 34 cm (at 70mm).

The Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG DN II lens barrel has a programmable AFL button. There is also a function for locking the zoom ring, as follows from the text of the press release of the future new product.

Autofocus will be significantly improved . Due to the HLA drive, autofocus will be three times faster than in the first version of the lens. The manufacturer also notes that the optics will focus not only quickly, but also silently. This will make it possible to place an on-camera microphone and not worry about potential noise from the lens and its accidental inclusion in the recording (this happened with lenses of previous generations).

The price of the Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG DN II has also been revealed. It will be 1349 euros.

Sony is also preparing a series of summer announcements. The compact advanced camera Sony ZV-E10 Mark II with a 26 megapixel Exmor R APS-C BSI CMOS sensor from the flagship Sony A6700 will be presented. In addition to the camera, the manufacturer will release new optics: Sony 85mm F/1.4 G-Master II and the incredible 24-70mm F/2.0 G-Master. None of the other manufacturers have analogues of such optics. The closest lens in terms of characteristics: Canon 28-70mm F/2L USM.
