Apple is preparing to introduce a new generation of smartphones — the iPhone 16 series in the fall of 2024. Traditionally, improvements will also concern the capabilities of the cameras of the new products, especially the iPhone 16 Pro model, which will receive a 5x optical zoom, which was previously available in the iPhone 15 Pro Max model. The most advanced camera will be in the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The source mentions a certain “super-telephoto” lens that this model will receive.
The external design of the new iPhone line has already been partially revealed. At the moment, one of the sources has published an image of the main camera block of the iPhone 16 Pro smartphone:
The smartphone will receive a triple main camera. The main and wide-angle modules will have a resolution of 48 MP. And the periscope telephoto module will have 12 MP with the ability to zoom 5x. For understanding: the current iPhone model has only one camera with a resolution of 48 MP.
Some foreign sources reveal details about the improvements in camera capabilities in future new products from Apple. The contract for the supply of optics for the 5x zoom of the iPhone 16 Pro was concluded with Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical from Taiwan. At the moment, they are actively increasing the production of these modules.
The main camera of the smartphone is based on the Sony IMX903 matrix. The optical format is 1/1.14 inches . Thus, Apple smartphones are gradually approaching the inch format of the main sensor.
It is specified that this 48 MP matrix has a two-level transistor technology, which assumes an increase in the efficiency of light collection by each pixel. This improves the dynamic range and reduces noise in the image. The image quality should be high.
However, it is not yet entirely clear whether the smartphone’s wide-angle module will have the same sensor. Although the resolution, apparently, will be the same – 48 megapixels.
The new iPhone 16 Pro will have a 6.3-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and a peak brightness of 1600 nits. At the same time, it is reported that this will be the latest Samsung M14 OLED display , which will debut in the line of new smartphones.
Samsung is also reported to supply these displays for the Google Pixel 9 series of smartphones with advanced cameras. The announcement of this line is expected by the end of summer 2024. These gadgets traditionally receive advanced cameras – the Google Pixel 8 Pro model ranks 8th in the DxOMark rating. The first, by the way, is the new Huawei Pura 70 Ultra with an inch main sensor.
Let’s get back to the iPhone 16 Pro. The battery capacity of this model will be only 3577 mAh. Of course, this is slightly better than the iPhone 15 Pro (it has 3274 mAh), but the increase is insignificant. Probably, this figure will also be increased in the iPhone 16 Pro Max model.
The iPhone 16 Pro is reported to receive the proprietary Apple A18 Pro processor. This is a six-core chip (2 cores at 3890 MHz and 4 cores at 2200 MHz), manufactured using 3-nm technology, the source specifies. This chip will receive advanced image processing capabilities – thus, we can expect an improvement in the quality of shooting in this area as well. The official announcement of the processor is expected on September 1.
The iPhone 16 series will run on the recently announced iOS 18 operating system, which includes advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. Thus, all models in this line will also have access to the new Apple Intelligence AI system, which will be launched in late 2024 or early 2025.
The main camera unit of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will increase in size again, but now we are talking about increasing the height of the module. It will protrude 3.9 mm more than in the previous generation
The first place in the DxOMark rating for camera capabilities is occupied by the new Huawei Pura 70 Ultra smartphone. The special feature of the entire Huawei Pura line is the use of XD Motion Engine technology. It allows you to create frames in high-speed shooting mode on the main module and TV camera.
