Edifier D32: Bluetooth 5.3 and Apple AirPlay 2 in retro design

The shape of the Edifier D32 wireless speaker evokes memories of the “golden age” of audio technology in the late 50s. The impression is enhanced by the proportions of the hand-carved wooden case with a white or black walnut surface. The novices’ affiliation with modernity is probably more noticeable at the rear – there is a double bass reflex port, which was rarely seen in technology in those years.

It enhances the bass response of a long-throw mid-bass driver, complemented by a pair of silk dome inch tweeters – quite a classic option. Together, this unique single-body triphonic covers the frequency range from 52 Hz to 40 kHz.

A pair of class D microcircuit amplifiers from Texas Instruments develop power up to 60 W, and a two-way active crossover is responsible for frequency distribution. Dynamic range correction with light compression adds a pleasant sound quality. Moreover, the D32 received Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wireless certificates.

Edifier D32 is equipped with a Bluetooth 5.3 module with support for SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs. But support for Apple AirPlay 2 with access to wireless streaming with a resolution of 16 bit/48 kHz can be considered a pleasant surprise. Moreover, by connecting the D32 to a computer or other suitable source via USB-C, you can listen to audio with a resolution of up to 24-bit/96 kHz. This includes full Hi-Res streaming from platforms such as Apple Music, Tidal, Qobuz, etc.

In addition to AirPlay 2, when connected to home Wi-Fi, support for Spotify and Tidal Connect is implemented. You can return to analogue roots with the 3.5mm AUX input. A modern alternative is the USB input. With a weight of 3 kg, the device can be easily taken with you, at least when traveling around the apartment. It is quite appropriate in the office, kitchen or bedroom. And it is completely autonomous – up to 11 hours of playback from the built-in battery. To control the D32, you can use not only beautiful old-school keys, but also the Edifier ConneX application, which contains, for example, equalizer settings.

In the US, the Edifier D32 Bluetooth speaker is already available for $130.
