Totem Bison: A new series of acoustic systems

The Canadian company Totem Acoustic has introduced a new series of acoustic systems Bison , which so far includes three models – bookshelf Bison Monitor and two floor – Bison Tower and Bison Twin Tower . The manufacturer assures that over time this series of acoustics will be replenished.

All three new products use a brand new tweeter with a fabric dome with a diameter of 1.3 inches and a powerful neodymium magnet system. Its operating range extends up to 30 kHz, and the lower limit is quite low – at the level of 2.5 kHz.

The Bison series speaker cabinets are characterized by increased rigidity due to the internal bracing system and the original design of the lock at the panel junction, which provides a large contact area when gluing. The Variable Density Fibreboard (VDF) used for the Bison series cabinets is 90% density on the outside and 65% on the inside. If a dense outer layer helps maintain shape, then a less dense inner layer is acoustically preferable.

The Totem Bison Monitor is a two-way bookshelf model equipped with a brand new 5.75″ long-throw cone woofer with a 3″ bass-reflex voice coil. The nominal impedance of the speaker is 8 ohms with a sensitivity of 87 dB. The crossover is tuned to 2.5 kHz and uses first order filters. The operating range extends from 40 Hz to 29.5 kHz (± 3 dB).

The floor model Totem Bison Tower is also made in a two-strip concept. But for the mid/bass range, a speaker with a cone with a diameter of 5.75 inches is responsible here, but this is a different radiator compared to that used in the shelf model. The nominal impedance of the speakers is 8 ohms with a sensitivity of 88 dB. The band separation frequency is the same as for bookshelves – 2.5 kHz. The crossover uses first order filters. The floor model plays from 33 Hz to 30 kHz (± 3 dB).

The older floor-standing model Totem Bison Twin Tower is also two-way, but the lower part of the frequency range is served by a pair of 5.75-inch woofers – the same as in the Bison Tower model. At the same time, the characteristics of the speakers are different – the nominal impedance is 4 ohms with a sensitivity of 90 dB. The crossover uses second-order filters, the crossover frequency is the same – 2.5 kHz. The operating range of the older floor model extends from 31 Hz to 29.5 kHz (± 3 dB).

All three models of the new Bison series are available in three finishes: White Oak , Black Ash or Satin White . The kit comes with protective grills on magnetic mounts. The Totem Bison Monitor shelf model has a suggested retail price of $2,500 . The junior Bison Tower floorstanders are available for $3,500 , while the top-of-the-line Totem Bison Twin Tower is $4,500 .
