This new television offers numerous appealing features, even in the absence of 8K content, making it ideal for movies, streaming, and premium gaming experiences. While it is true that, like many 8K models, it comes with a significant price tag, there are currently 4K screens available that are even more expensive. However, this investment provides access to LG’s top-tier AI upscaling, advanced processing, and superior tone mapping capabilities. In our review of the LG 75QNED99T6A 8K HDR MiniLED, we will explore additional intriguing aspects of its performance.

Design

LG QNED99T – Review

The design of the LG 75QNED99T TV maintains the distinctive characteristics of the LG QNED Mini LED series. It features a light steel silver finish that exudes simplicity and elegance. The expansive screen is enhanced by mini LED backlighting that spans the entire rear panel. The base is designed as a rectangular stand, although in some markets, it may come with standard V-shaped legs. This robust base is capable of supporting the substantial weight of the display. In contrast to the previous QNED99 series, which utilized a wide, moon-shaped stand, this model offers a central space at the front for accommodating a moderately sized soundbar. The screen’s slim bezels, measuring just 0.8 cm, create an illusion of the image floating effortlessly in space. At the bottom center, you will find the status indicators and the power button. The rear of the TV features a sleek surface with ventilation holes distributed across the back panel. The lower section includes grooves for cable management, allowing cables to be routed through the stand’s neck. The panel itself is impressively thin, measuring approximately 2.9 cm. If wall mounting is desired, the cable management clips can be removed, though they are 0.9 cm thick and slightly protrude. This removal, however, leaves no designated space for cable storage. Both the 75-inch and 86-inch models in the LG QNED99T series are compatible with the LG Slim wall mount. The updated Magic Remote is user-friendly, comfortably fitting in the hand and featuring quick access buttons for popular streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, as well as Google Assistant voice control. An NFC-enabled version of the remote is also available, and the number buttons can be programmed to launch favorite apps and services.

Image quality

The LG QNED99T television features an impressive 8K resolution of 7680×4320, enhanced by Quantum Dot NanoCell Mini LED Backlight technology, which utilizes miniature LEDs for its backlighting. While the company has not disclosed the number of dimming zones for the 75-inch variant, the 86-inch model boasts around 2,400 zones, resulting in improved detail in dark scenes and on black backgrounds. Additionally, the manufacturer has elevated the peak brightness for HDR content to 1300 nits. Testing indicates that a low level of local dimming is recommended, as this setting minimizes backlight flickering during rapid motion. This LG 8K television, equipped with an ADS panel (a type of IPS), achieves black levels comparable to those found in leading VA panels.

At times, it appears to rival OLED technology, showcasing a performance quality that aligns seamlessly with the TV’s high-end classification. Nevertheless, there are instances when the TV’s typically outstanding black levels are unexpectedly accompanied by a subtle yet noticeable blurring effect. The ADS (Advanced Super Dimension Switch) panel offers impressive viewing angles, ensuring that the colors remain vibrant and saturated regardless of your position in the room. There is no necessity to be seated at a specific angle. The latest α9 Gen7 AI Processor 8K effectively upscales 4K (or lower) content to 8K resolution. Finding native 8K content, whether filmed or edited in 8K, remains a challenge, particularly when it comes to 8K HDR material. Aside from a few visually appealing YouTube videos featuring stunning landscapes and vibrant wildlife, there is limited content available to fully utilize the QNED99T’s 8K capabilities. Consequently, the ability of an 8K television to upscale both 4K and Full HD (1080p) content is crucial for practical usage. In the near term, most viewers will primarily watch content in native Full HD and 4K resolutions on an 8K TV. Regarding color accuracy, the QNED99T TV categorizes its picture modes into two main types: SDR and HDR viewing.

For standard content, the Filmmaker mode delivers the most precise and true-to-standard image, achieving a DeltaE (color rendering error) value of 5.5, which can be improved to 1.2 post-calibration. In HDR mode, Filmmaker Mode also provides the most accurate representation, with a Delta E of 3.3. The wide color gamut encompasses 95% of the DCI-P3 standard, aligning with the Ultra HD Premium criteria. For Dolby Vision, the Dolby Vision Cinema Home mode is recommended for bright environments, while the Dolby Vision Cinema mode is ideal for viewing in darker settings.

Motion and Game Processing

The fluidity of motion on the 75QNED99T TV screen can be attributed to the black frame insertion feature, which is included in the TruMotion settings. To achieve optimal animation smoothness, it is advisable to adjust the D-Judder setting to 3. This adjustment ensures that motion appears natural, eliminating any sensation of stuttering or excessive blurriness. This model is capable of supporting a maximum resolution of 8K at 120 Hz, making it suitable for high-performance PCs. Such a resolution can only be utilized in gaming scenarios with these advanced systems. However, contemporary gaming consoles, including the widely used Xbox Series and PS5, are limited to a maximum resolution of 4K at 120 Hz. As always, LG prioritizes the gaming experience: the Game Optimizer mode and Game Dashboard feature image settings tailored specifically for gaming. Additionally, there is a function to mitigate screen tearing, such as FreeSync Premium. Engaging the game mode reduces joystick response time to just 15 ms at 60 Hz, with even quicker response times at 120 Hz.

Smart TV

The LG QNED99T television is powered by the latest LG webOS smart platform, version 2024. Its interface is responsive and user-friendly, allowing for the creation of individual user profiles. Family members can tailor the home screen according to their preferences. To access the fundamental smart features of the TV, users must agree to log in to their LG account. For enhanced smart services, users are required to accept several agreements, including the Viewing Information Agreement, Voice Information Agreement, Preference-Based Advertising Agreement, and LG Channels Agreement. LG provides options to reset your advertising ID, restrict ad tracking, and remove viewing and voice data, although these features will only be accessible after data collection has occurred. The Dynamic Q Cards feature in webOS offers streamlined access to various services, organized into customizable categories such as Home Office, Home Center, Sports, and Games. Additionally, LG QNED 2024 televisions are compatible with Apple AirPlay and Chromecast, enhancing connectivity and mobile integration.

Sound

The expansive screen size is complemented by a robust 4.2-channel audio system, delivering 60 W of power and featuring built-in woofers. The audio performance is notably impressive for a television intended for movie viewing in a compact space, with the bass being particularly prominent. However, for those seeking to experience Dolby Atmos or TrueHD audio at its best, an HDMI eARC connection can be utilized to link to a home theater system or soundbar, such as the LG S90TY.

Connections

Every HDMI port is version 2.1, with HDMI #2 specifically supporting ARC/eARC. Additional connectivity features consist of a digital optical output, three USB ports (including one USB 3.0), antenna jacks, a LAN port, and a CI slot. For wireless connections, the device offers WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, which includes support for Bluetooth Audio.

Conclusion

This TV builds upon the Quantum Dot NanoCell Mini LED backlight technology established in the previous generation. Enhancements in image processing have led to more refined and smoother zone control. Additionally, the brightness has seen a modest increase. The upgraded processor offers 1.3 times faster AI capabilities, 2.3 times improved graphics performance, and 1.6 times quicker processing speed compared to its predecessor. For those with the financial means, this is undoubtedly a valuable investment.
