LG TV lineup 2024: OLED, QNED and Mini LED

In 2024, ahead of the 2024 CES in Las Vegas, LG unveiled its new line of OLED TVs. And while this line of LG OLED displays may be more of a slight improvement on the 2023 models than a revolutionary leap, there are some new surprises in store for serious AV tech fans.

Given the leap forward in WRGB technology, last year’s LG G3 models brought the possibility of Micro Lens Array technology . LG calls it Brightness Booster Max technology to reflect the fact that MLA hardware is only part of what makes this a premium OLED TV. What features await us in the 2024 LG OLED TVs?

LG OLED TVs 2024

Alpha 11 AI

The main picture improvement should come from the new processor, which LG claims is a very big step forward over its predecessor. The company called it Alpha 11 AI instead of Alpha 10 AI , which was supposed to replace the Alpha 9 processor in 2023.

LG claims the Alpha 11 AI chip will offer four times the AI performance of its predecessor, 1.7 times the graphics performance, and 1.3 times the processing power. And all this is combined with 2.5 GB of memory.

The biggest news regarding the Alpha 11 AI video processor is that LG AI Picture Pro’s deep learning-based image enhancement system can now handle all sources. This also includes those connected to the TV via HDMI, and not just broadcasts and some streaming services, as was the case before.

The new AI Picture Pro system includes the latest in genre and scene analysis, noise reduction and OLED Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro features. The latest technology breaks down an image into thousands of analysis units to make its tonal mapping more accurate. The Alpha 11 AI processor also introduces two potentially key new AI Picture Pro features.

This is the improvement of objects through visual perception and processing by AI Director. The visual object enhancement feature is said to analyze every pixel in an image to better detect and more efficiently process various objects in an image.

This is necessary in order to make the image more realistic. In this case, key objects will be expressed more clearly. AI Director Processing tries to apply color theory to everything you watch. In this case, color will be used to enhance emotions.

These two new features may seem problematic for AV enthusiasts who prefer their TV to simply show, as accurately as possible, the image they’re watching. However, given the power and scope of the deep learning AI behind these features, even avid movie buffs will want to at least experiment with them.

LG G4 OLED

The Alpha 11 processor also introduces several potentially important new elements to the AI Sound Pro G4 system. This is a virtual 11.1.2 channel upmixer that can even be applied to stereo sources. Also added is a new voice remastering system that can use artificial intelligence.

All this is needed to extract voices from audio mixes and improve their clarity without affecting the rest of the mix. These new features complement previous AI Sound Pro features such as Adaptive Sound Control, AI Acoustic Tuning to optimize room sound, and Amplifier to create more dynamic and powerful sound.

Although it’s unclear whether LG has made any significant improvements to the Micro Lens Array system hardware that helped the G3 achieve such a revolutionary brightness boost in 2023. LG says its latest Brightness Booster Max technology will make the G4 even brighter than the LG G3 , but it’s not entirely clear by how much.

LG is simply saying that the G4s will be 70% brighter than “regular” OLED screens. That is, entry-level basic models like the LG B series. Another significant advancement in the G4 line is the Brightness Booster Max system, which extends to the 83-inch model.

The series is no longer limited to 55, 65 and 77 inches. The only G4 model that won’t benefit from Brightness Booster Max is the new, largest 97-inch screen. Meanwhile, gamers have a new feature they can look forward to in the form of support for games with a 144Hz refresh rate.

This is assuming you have a computer that can support that refresh rate. LG says this feature makes its new OLED “Evo” models, including the new C4, M4, and G4, the first TVs to officially support both Nvidia G-Sync and 144Hz. Of course, they also support AMD FreeSync.

LG Signature OLED TV M3 - Zero Connect.

LG M4 OLED

The M4 models mentioned in the press release will be LG’s 2024 flagship OLED TVs. Anyone familiar with the LG M3 TVs, which LG introduced relatively late in 2023, can expect the new M4 line to continue to be built around LG’s Zero Connect system.

This is a system in which an external connection unit transmits images with a resolution of up to 4K / 144 Hz HDR wirelessly to OLED screens. The M4 will improve on its M3 predecessors as it will be equipped with the latest Alpha 11 AI processor. The series will also feature Brightness Booster Max technology in all screen sizes except the 97-inch.

The M4 and G4 screens will feature so-called “One Wall Designs”, ideal for wall mounting. They will also come with a five-year warranty as a sign of LG’s confidence in their durability. Another new feature exclusive to the LG M4 and G4 OLEDs will be the new 4-screen system, powered by the power of the Alpha 11 processor.

This will split the screen into four smaller screens that display different sources. In addition, the power of the new processor increases the range of source combinations that can be configured and improves the interface for selecting Multiview sources.

LG C4 OLED

Completing LG’s so-called evo line of premium OLED panels will be the C4 line. As with the C Series in LG’s 2023 OLED lineup, the C4 won’t benefit from the full Brightness Booster Max technology. Some C4 screen sizes will instead revert to regular Brightness Booster technology.

This reflects the specific combination of a slightly improved version of the Alpha 9 processor found on last year’s C3 models and LG’s evo panels, which deliver more brightness than base OLED panels without getting the extra brightness from MLA technology.

LG says the C4 should have a slight increase in brightness over the LG C3 , but doesn’t provide any hard numbers. As in previous years, the 42- and 48-inch C4s won’t get Brightness Booster technology, although LG confirms they will definitely be brighter than their 2023 counterparts.

LG C4 loses the 5-year warranty that the G4 and M4 series have. They also won’t support four screens. The One Wall design will be replaced with an ultra-thin design. However, they retain both 144Hz gaming and far-field voice control features.

The latter feature makes it possible to talk to the TV without having to press a button on the remote control. The LG C4 line in 2024 will be available in screen sizes of 42, 48, 55, 65, 77 and 83 inches.

LG B4 OLED

Rounding out LG’s OLED offering for 2024 will be the entry-level B4 series. These models, available in screen sizes of 77, 65, 55 and 48 inches, support a maximum frequency of 120 Hz rather than 144 Hz, and make way for the new Alpha 8 AI 4K processor, which LG rather vaguely describes as “legacy” from last year’s Alpha processor 9 AI.

There is no far-field voice recognition on the B4. They also do not have Brightness Booster technologies. This means they will be significantly less bright than their older brothers. However, they still get Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support , which all of LG’s more premium 2024 models have.

They will also be equipped with the latest, much improved webOS 24 platform and a dual-screen Multiview system. As for prices and sales start dates, LG has not yet provided such information.

While LG’s OLED TVs have resonated better with consumers than its premium QNED LCD TVs in recent years, the brand certainly can’t be accused of treating its LCD TVs like second-class models.

There’s always a wide range of price points and LCD display technologies to choose from for people looking for brighter or cheaper alternatives to LG’s OLED models. This trend continues with the introduction of LG’s new QNED TV lineup for 2024.

LG QNED TVs 2024

Alpha 8 AI

The 2024 QNED series is driven by the new Alpha 8 AI and Alpha 5 AI processors, as well as its commitment to offering new larger screen sizes. But these new advancements will of course build on QNED’s popular existing features such as NanoCell /Quantum Dot color technology.

These advancements also include full-scale local dimming lighting systems and, in the case of premium models, mini-LED lighting. The Alpha 8 AI processor is said to deliver a 1.3x increase in AI performance over its predecessor, a 2.3x increase in graphics performance, and an overall 1.6x increase in processing speed.

Power improvements like these should result in faster image improvements, especially when it comes to upscaling HD images to 4K. But LG also points to some specific image improvements. The Alpha 8 AI video processor is designed for the new QNED TVs.

AI Picture Pro

It is used primarily with LG’s AI Picture Pro system, which can now handle both HDMI and tuner sources. The system can now identify more than just the types of content being viewed and adjust picture and sound quality accordingly.

AI Picture Pro can also identify faces, objects, and backgrounds in a scene, and address such individual image elements differently. This is intended to “rearrange” the image so that it looks the way the human eye perceives the real world.

Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro

Significant improvements have also been made to LG’s Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro system. This system breaks the image into small blocks to better identify the brightest and darkest areas to optimize the HDR effect on the screen. All this results in a more detailed, dynamic and three-dimensional image.

Picture Wizard

The new QNED processing system also supports a new personalized version of LG’s Picture Wizard. Any family member who sets up an account on the TV will be able to automatically activate their preferred picture settings, as well as their preferred home page, at any time.

Wow Orchestra and Wow Cast

The new processor doesn’t stop at improving images. It also improves the sound of the latest QNED TVs, allowing some models to downmix incoming audio into 9.1.2 virtual channels . The QNED line can also easily customize its built-in sound systems with LG soundbars thanks to LG’s Wow Orchestra feature. The top-of-the-line 8K additionally supports Wow Cast, where lossless Dolby Atmos audio can be streamed wirelessly to LG.

Quantum Dot and NanoCell

Based on past experience, the combination of QNED screens with quantum dots and nanocells should provide unusually bright, wide, yet refined color reproduction. The so-called Precision Dimming technology is available in the 2024 LG QNED99T and QNED90T Mini LED series.

The TV is now claimed to be capable of reproducing a million steps of gray scale and providing gradation with 20-bit precision. This should result in better tonal control of colors across the entire light spectrum and up to 64 times (LG claims) more detail in dark scenes.

Design

The design of the latest LG QNED models has been improved to make them thinner. However, the vast majority of the latest models have a depth of less than 30 mm. LG has also developed new slim stands for the latest QNED TVs that offer easy cable management.

Some screen sizes support two height settings for their tabletop stands. This allows you to either sit the screen low on a flat, centrally mounted stand, or raise the screen another 40mm or so to make room for one of LG’s newest soundbars.

improved webOS 24 platform

LG webOS 24

The entire new QNED line will run on the latest version of LG’s webOS intelligent platform. A significant achievement is that this 2024 webOS platform will have four years of upgradeability for future webOS platform updates. The new future-proof webOS 24 will also be available for the 2022 8K QNED lineups, QNED99 and QNED95 series.

TV LG QNED 2024 model year

There will be four new QNED series in 2024. It will be led by QNED99T. These 8K models will be available in 86-inch and 75-inch screen sizes. They feature a slim, wall-mountable Gallery design. They will use mini-LED lighting and a large number of local dimming zones.

In addition, QNED99T TVs will support a native refresh rate of 120 Hz and offer the highest level of color reproduction, called QNED Color Pro. This series uses Alpha 9 AI 8K processors, specially designed to meet the additional demands of handling 8K pixel counts.

Also in the premium 4K QNED line will be the QNED90T series models. Available in 86, 75 and 65 inch screen sizes. They will have a “slim” design, built-in 120Hz panels, mini-LED lighting systems and QNED Color Pro level of color rendering. However, their processors will use the new Alpha 8 artificial intelligence system.

Below that is the QNED85T series. This line includes a 98-inch model for the first time. It is joined by 86, 75, 65, 55 and 50-inch variants of the QNED85T. This series pares down the design to what’s called a “super-thin” level and retains the built-in 120Hz panel and Alpha 8 series AI processor.

However, the number of dimming zones is reduced to the so-called Advanced Local Dimming level compared to Precision. The dimming system loses the “Pro” specification in the QNED Color feature and switches to regular LED lighting instead of Mini LED. The most affordable of the 2024 LG QNED TVs will be the QNED80T series.

The series will feature a new screen size of 86 inches, which will be paired with 75-inch, 65-inch, 55-inch, 50-inch, and 43-inch variants. The Q80T series will retain the ultra-thin design of the Q85T, as well as the QNED Color specification and an “advanced” local dimming engine.

But the refresh rate will drop to 60Hz. The processor will be Alpha 5 with artificial intelligence. While it’s not as powerful as the Alpha 8 AI, it’s still an improvement over the processor found in the Q80T’s predecessors. These models should go on sale starting in spring 2024.
